The debate about the historical and spiritual significance of Kaneh Bosm, a term found in the Bible refers to cannabis or hemp, has resurfaced in popular culture, thanks to The Chosen TV series. In Season 4, Episode 1, the show depicts the disciples creating and selling anointing oil, which includes Kaneh Bosm, to the Pharisees. This subtle but significant scene brings attention to the connection between cannabis and the healing practices of Jesus.
What is Kaneh Bosm?
The term Kaneh Bosm appears in the Hebrew Bible, particularly in Exodus 30:22-25, where God instructs Moses to create a sacred anointing oil. The original recipe includes:
• Myrrh
• Cinnamon
• Cassia
• Olive oil
• Kaneh Bosm (translated as “aromatic cane” in many versions)
Some scholars and historians believe Kaneh Bosm refers to cannabis, based on linguistic and cultural analyses:
• Etymology: The Hebrew word “kaneh” means “reed” or “cane,” while “bosm” means “aromatic.” Combined, the phrase could describe the cannabis plant, which is both aromatic and reed-like.
• Historical Context: Ancient cultures in the Middle East, including Egypt and Assyria, are known to have used cannabis for medicinal and ritualistic purposes.
Anointing Oil in Biblical Healing
In the Bible, anointing oil was not just symbolic it was a tool for healing and sanctification. The oil was used to:
• Consecrate priests and kings (Exodus 30:30).
• Heal the sick, as referenced in Mark 6:13, where the disciples “anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.”
• Enhance spiritual practices and rituals.
Kaneh Bosm refers to cannabis, its inclusion in anointing oil suggests that cannabis could have played a role in ancient healing practices, potentially aligning with Jesus’s healing ministry.
